Empowerment- this one word is our message about Autism. We chronicle our experiences with Autism and Autism treatment to provide you with an example of what CAN be done and how WE have done it. We recognize that no one solution is right for every child with Autism, but several Autism treatments have been proven to be more effective than others for a child with Autism. The path to recovery from Autism is knowledge, empowerment, action and success. Toward this end, we share with you our experiences with Autism.

"Reality ABA"- ...Katherine Lee's ABA Diary
by Katherine Lee

Hi, I'm Katherine Lee- wife to Bryan Lee and mother to two- Ruth Lee and Daniel Lee. In April of 1995, Daniel was diagnosed with autism. We were given no hope for him. We soon found that his one chance for a full life was ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis). ABA is a behavioral therapy that research has indicated would "recover" around 50 percent of the children diagnosed. We jumped in to ABA with all feet and never looked back. Our goal has always been recovery for our son.

I am writing this ABA diary because I've not found any resource for parents (or professionals) that confronts the many real life challenges that face families trying to operate in home programs on a long term basis. While there are certainly many wonderful writings on ABA, anecdotal stories, and great information books, none of them are a raw account of the painful if not mentally draining daily battle against autism. I hope that parents find comfort and knowledge in following our journey over the last 8 years, and that professionals gain more insight into the heart of parents who attempt ABA programs.

The diary allows me to take you back to the early days of our program or write about current events. I plan to do both on an ongoing basis.

This is reality reading. I'm not going to sanitize the story, accept where necessary to protect my family and the wonderful team that has followed us through our son's treatment. However, in this reality show, you'll not read of bikini's or scantily clothed people... well, scratch that...I have some pretty wild stories....so if you are ready, join us in our Autism weblog for "Reality ABA"...Katherine Lee's ABA Diary.
