I recently read a wonderful discussion on a parent list about schools, ABA, insurance, etc.
The thread was largely about where responsibilities should lie. Many think on the schools. One brave sole said not the schools, insurance. (because ABA is a medical treatment) I`ll go out further on a limb and say both. Autism is a chronic illness. ABA is a therapy. Insurance should pay. But as with other chronic illnesses, schools should be able to provide the upmost professionals to back up the therapy, so as to maintain all gains and allow no regress in the illness. Support, whatever is needed, should be available, as it is for other children who have to have treatments for chronic illnesses.
Finally, parent or guardians should have large responsibilities as well, as they would with any chronic illness. This oversight is critical to the well being of the child. So... I`m way out there in this discussion. Rest assured there are many varying opinions on this most crucial topic.
One thing we can ALL agree on...more needs to be done by every one.
My heart is with you,
